Great Bear is committed to reducing
the impact and improving the environmental sustainability of
its operations. How we operate is part of our core values and it’s also sound business practice.
In our policy statement we commit our company to;
- Complying with all relevant environmental legislation and approved codes of practice;
- Seeking to keep wastage to a minimum and maximise the efficient use of materials and resources;
- Provide training to all our staff to ensure that we all work in accordance with this policy;
- Developing our management processes to ensure that environmental factors are considered during planning and implementation.
- Regularly communicating our environmental performance to our employees and other significant stakeholders.
Fact file
- We have our own in-house Driver Trainer that works right across the business in delivering driver improvement programmes targeted at improving fuel efficiency and maintaining our excellent accident record.
- All of the Great Bear fleet already complies with the stringent new Euro 4/5 exhaust emission environmental standards.
- Our modern efficient fleet, collaborative operating and investment in driver training has yielded over 400 tonnes of carbon fuel savings in 2009.
- A cross company energy forum ensures that best practice is spread across the business.
- Empty running analysis continues to be a key performance measure for our transport operations focusing on driving out wasteful empty journey legs. We partner with regional hauliers if that means a more sustainable model.
- We work with a number of food and beverage companies and have embraced the principles of the Food and Drink Federation “10 point Environmental checklist for Greener Food Transport “.
- We operate several Primary Consolidation Centres (PCC) for major retailers. These operations help to streamline the flow of goods and information across the total supply chain and reduce total miles.
